Audi A4 2015 Review: Premium Refinement at a Reasonable Price

The Audi A4 has always worn its excellence quietly. While rivals like the BMW 3 Series shout about their driving dynamics and Mercedes-Benz leans on prestige, the A4 simply gets on with being very, very good at almost everything — and the 2015 B8 facelift is the best expression of that philosophy in a generation most buyers can actually afford.

Design: Timeless Over Trendy

The B8 facelift brought sharper LED daytime running lights, a more assertive single-frame grille, and cleaner body lines that still look contemporary more than a decade on. The proportions are near-perfect for a mid-size executive sedan: long enough to feel important, compact enough to thread through city traffic without anxiety.

Inside, the story continues. High-gloss piano black trim, thick-rimmed steering wheel, and instrument dials that read with military precision. The materials are not merely adequate — they feel genuinely premium, with soft-touch surfaces on every surface you actually touch.

The 2.0 TDI Engine: Frugal Workhorse

At 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque, the 2.0 TDI is not a headline grabber on paper. In reality, it is one of the most accomplished diesel units ever fitted to a family car. The torque arrives early and stays broad, making the A4 feel far more relaxed than its 9.3-second 0–100 time suggests.

On a mixed route — motorway cruise, A-roads, a bit of town — 4.7 L/100 km is consistently achievable. On longer motorway legs, 4.2 L/100 km is not unusual with a light right foot. Running costs from fuel alone are substantially lower than any petrol equivalent in this segment.

Driving: Composed, Not Exciting

This is where honesty matters. The A4’s front-wheel-drive setup does not offer the rear-driven balance of the BMW 3 Series. In spirited driving, the front axle runs out of grip before the chassis does, and the steering — accurate but light — communicates less than a driver purist would want.

For the other 95% of driving life, however, the A4 is exceptional. The ride quality on 17-inch wheels is supple without being wallowy. Motorway refinement is class-leading for the price. The 6-speed manual gearbox has a short, precise throw that remains satisfying to use.

Verdict

The 2015 Audi A4 2.0 TDI in Base trim is one of the most sensible premium cars in today’s used market. It asks you to accept modest outright performance in exchange for remarkable everyday competence — and most buyers will consider that an entirely fair trade. If you want sharper driving dynamics, the BMW 3 Series 320i is the answer. If you want an executive car that does everything with quiet precision and minimal running costs, the A4 is the one.
